However, prior to Gandhi's arrival in Champaran, things had shifted. New, synthetic dyes had been invented. They were cheaper and easier to manufacture, and the indigo industry was circling the drain. The landlords succeeded for some time in withholding relevant information about the decline of indigo from their tenants. Presenting themselves as magnanimous, they canceled indigo contracts in exchange for exorbitant rent increases of roughly sixty percent. Meanwhile, they also imposed illegal taxes on nearly every institution in which the Champaran farmers might engage. If a couple wanted to get married, they had to pay a tax. Such taxes were also imposed on small and large appliances and most household fixtures. Between the taxes and rent gouging, many Champaran farmers were literally starving. Those who rebelled and threatened not to pay the increased rent were beaten.
